چکیده
Two constructions are described: one gives soluble groups of derived length 4, the other uses acting on a rooted tree.

On Groups with Uncountably Many Subgroups of Finite Index
Let K be the kernel of an epimorphism χ : G → Z, for G a finitely presented group. If K has uncountably many normal subgroups of finite index r, then K has uncountably many subgroups (not necessarily normal) of any finite index greater than r. In particular, this is the case whenever G is subgroup separable and K is nonfinitely generated. Assume that G has an abelian HNN base contained in K. If...
متن کاملCohomological properties of the profinite completion of Bianchi groups
We prove that the Bianchi groups, that is the groups PSL(2,O) where O is the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic number field, are good. This is a property introduced by J.P. Serre which relates the cohomology groups of a group to those of its profinite completion. We also develop properties of goodness to be able to show that certain natural central extensions of Fuchsian groups are res...
متن کاملSpaces of Uncountably Many Dimensions*
Riemann in his Habilitations Schrift of 1854 suggested the notion of ^-dimensional space (where n is a natural number) as an extension of the notion of three-dimensional euclidean space. Hubert extended the notion still further by defining a space of a countably infinite number of dimensions. Fréchetf in 1908 defined two other spaces of countably many dimensions, which he called D„ and J3W. Tyc...
متن کاملSimple groups with the same prime graph as $D_n(q)$
Vasil'ev posed Problem 16.26 in [The Kourovka Notebook: Unsolved Problems in Group Theory, 16th ed.,Sobolev Inst. Math., Novosibirsk (2006).] as follows:Does there exist a positive integer $k$ such that there are no $k$ pairwise nonisomorphicnonabelian finite simple groups with the same graphs of primes? Conjecture: $k = 5$.In [Zvezdina, On nonabelian simple groups having the same prime graph a...

γ = c0 + c1p+ c2p + · · · = (. . . c3c2c1c0)p, with ci ∈ Z, 0 ≤ ci ≤ p− 1, called the digits of γ. This ring has a topology given by a restriction of the product topology—we will see this below. The ring Zp can be viewed as Z/pZ for an ‘infinitely high’ power n. This is a useful idea, for example, in the study of Diophantine equations: if such an equation has a solution in the integers, then it...
